One of the first few things a person learns is how to walk and talk. Their parents or guardians spend time with them, kindly repeating words to them and holding their hands as they take their first steps. This is the first example in our lives of family engagement in education.
As children continue to grow and evolve, they need a support system to provide them with an all-encompassing positive learning environment. From birth or adoption, parents and guardians have a strong, natural influence on their children’s educational endeavors. The inspiration they receive shows incredible promise in their ability to focus and make their parents proud.
When family members take partial responsibility for a child’s education, the child’s ability and willingness to learn excel. Studies on parent involvement took 498 parents and guardians of elementary school students and separated them by their levels of educational involvement.
They were grouped into the highly involved, somewhat involved, and substantially uninvolved to see how levels of their home, school, and invitational engagement faired. The group of students with highly involved parents achieved noticeably higher academic scores than those of the least involved parents.
It can be theorized that parental support is the foundation of children’s education due to their enhanced self-esteem and determination to make their parents proud. Adults can be idolized by their children, especially when they make a big impression on their lives and choices.
Our emotional health relies in part on self-esteem. Even as adults, how we work is directly affected by our amount of confidence. Boosting that courage and belief in themselves is a firsthand response to positive engagement in a child’s scholarly life.
Personal, positive, and productive association in a child’s educational undertakings doesn’t always come naturally to parents. Sometimes adults are unaware of the best ways to promote their involvement. This could be simply rectified by directing them to the starting line.
Parents can get engaged with collaborative homework and study sessions that advocate social-emotional learning. This type of learning strategy offers a safe space for children to open up and absorb more knowledge because of their healthy relationships with others. This can be as simple as asking how their days are going and how they want them to continue. Parents can participate better in their lives and form a bond where any moment can be a teaching one.
This relationship also boosts open communication between educators, children, and parents. This creates a common ground and understanding of where the child’s education is going, and how to continuously improve it.
Children are always learning new things very quickly. They’re watching the adults and following their cues for what to do, how to act, and what to say. This carries over to their lives in the classroom. The more parents show appreciation and concern toward their child’s knowledge and growth, the more they will learn and the better they will become. As the saying goes, "It starts at home.”
